Abstract

Our project was to make perfume by ourselves. The point of the project was to make scents we would enjoy and we took interest in the idea. The hypothesis we came up with was that this perfume would be a nice pleasant smelling fragrance for anyone to enjoy. We started by getting our ingredients and followed online directions to make the perfume and put it in the bottles. We made it sucessfully and blended everything together. Our goal was met because we wanted it to be pleasant smelling and it was according to our family.[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIyT2FuZEklMjIlM0UlM0MlMkZhJTNF[/vc_raw_html][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Object and Inquiry

In today’s lab we set out to find out how natural ingredients can make a fragrance. The object of our study is perfume and our inquiry is how we can make a natural perfume with different ingredients and how that compares to other perfumes. [/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIyVG9ySCUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRmElM0U=[/vc_raw_html][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

Hypothesis

Our perfume will be a nice pleasant-smelling fragrance for everyone. This will provide consumers with a new fragrance. We will have multiple scents and people will decide which is their favorite and least favorite. We will make it out of natural ingredients.[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIyUldVJTIyJTNFJTNDJTJGYSUzRQ==[/vc_raw_html][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Research Write Up

Prior Knowledge
Sofia: I know that perfume has three “notes” to it. The top middle and base. Most of the scents are pressed from flowers and it also consists of oils to create scents. Perfume and Cologne are kind of the same, but scents are usually separated by gender. Certain scents are more feminine and some are more masculine. I know that people have been using fragrances for a very long time. It started from Mesopotamia. It is always in liquid form.
Zara: I know perfume is made of many elements, chemicals and different scents for different fragrances. I’m not entirely sure about what chemicals are in it but I think some form of alcohol is in it, possibly ethyl or isopropyl. There’s probably not much as it can be harmful but it must react with the chemicals in a way. Each ingredient has a very specific measurement when mixed and too much of one might not be good for the result that is going to be created. The point of perfume is having a unique scent for each bottle and that comes from ingredients such as fruit or herbs.
Research Summary
The first source we used is perfume.com. We used this to find out We used this website to do research on the types of perfumes and fragrances. The main types are Parfum, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Cologne, and Eau Fraische. These types of fragrances have different fragrance concentration. That is how they are differentiated. When you purchase fragrances the packaging has the title of what type it is listed.
The Telegraph has an article about the history of perfume. It explains that Hieroglyphics in tombs showed that Ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians were using and making perfume back in 3,000 BC. The first to be thought as the founders of perfume were Egyptian priests using it resin to mask the smell of sacrificial offerings.
Thought.co shows how to make your own signature perfume scent. It lists materials you need and basic information on how to make your own DIY fragrance and describes essential oils and how they contribute to the scent. The article also describes perfumery notes and how they mix in to different bases that the essential oils are in.
On Sciencing.com, it explains that the perfume is made up of many ingredients and can be traced back several thousand years ago. Making perfume requires lots of chemistry knowledge. Perfume used to be used for religious traditions. Perfume consists of around 80 percent ethyl alcohol. The rest are essential oils and when combined, the chemicals work together to create the scent. Many perfumes are not entirely safe because of certain chemicals inside that could harm the skin.
The source madesafe.org has content on the safety of perfume. There are thousands of ingredients used in fragrances but many can be toxic. Phthalates are toxins that can impact the lungs and many other allergens. To know if a certain fragrance is safe, it should have a Made Safe certification. Reliable fragrances list all the ingredients.
Perfumes use many elements to make the main scent and the categories are vegetal, animal and synthetic. The vegetal are mostly plants and roots found in nature. The animal can produce a substance but is on the more expensive side. Synthetic materials are artificial and not necessarily from the ingredient said to be. For example, a

Procedure

For our Science Fair project we chose to make our own perfume. We use perfume and thought it would be interesting to create a scent. So we did research and chose reliable sources. We chose our sources and then we started our research. We summarized it and explained why our sources are reliable. Then we started to write down what materials we need and started to get them. We are going to be using essential oils for our scents. We worked on gathering information on how to do our experiment.
We ordered our materials, and they took a few weeks to arrive. Then we started out experiment. Then we started to create out final product. The recipe we used is:
½ ounce ethanol
2 tablespoons of water
15 drops of essential oils. 5 drops is ¼ teaspoon
These are the controlled variables. The only difference is which different scents and drops are the essential oils.
The recipes are in order of the base notes, middle notes and top notes.

Data and Analysis

The first recipe we used 5 drops mango, pineapple and violet. This one smells like a McDonald’s mango pineapple smoothie fell into a rabbit’s food. This was our first attempt so we don’t think that it went that well because we were supposed to mix the alcohol with the scents first before adding water but we didn’t so we could see the oil drops in it still.
The second recipe we used was 5 drops of rose which and 5 drops of cucumber melon and then 5 drops and 5 of plumeria. It’s the same as the first but we switched the essential oils. This one turned our cloudy but could be for overmixing. This one smells good so it’s more successful than the last.
During this we process we altered our recipe. We divided the water and the ethanol in half. We kept the essential oils the same. We realized that the amount we were making was too big for the bottles.
For the third perfume we used red cherry, strawberry and watermelon.
For the fourth we used apple, rose, and lemon.
The last one we used orange, mango and violet. We finished making our five fragrances and then cleaned up everything else.

Results and Conclusion

Our results were 5 different perfume scents. We were interested in this topic and found it simple to make. With only a few different ingredients we were able to complete our goal. To us they smell amazing and to another family member they also liked it. If we could present this in real life we think that people would have really loved it. We found that our experiment accomplished out final goal and we are satisfied with it. [/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIySWFuZFIlMjIlM0UlM0MlMkZhJTNF[/vc_raw_html][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Insights and Reflections

Sofia: The results of this invention have led me to think more about how much it takes to create a fragrance. I wonder if famous designer brands take weeks of experimenting for the perfect scent. I have learned that it should not be too strong and there should be hints of many different scents. I personally think that our experiment went really well and we were able to make 5 scents. The timing of our project could have been a little better but it all worked out successfully.
Zara: The results of this invention and experiment have led me to think how it seems simple but probably not. We made our simply but for real fragrance makers, they have to get the oils themselves and come up with a unique scent because it’s for their marketing. Overall I thought I wouldn’t enjoy the project but I did. I think it was the long break that changed my mind. The time frame wasn’t the smoothest though but it went well. We got the data, wrote our reports and all. I ended up liking the fruity smells more and gagged at the flower scents sometimes so that shows something. My family enjoyed the scents but I was still kinda confused by what the point of making it was. I think the thesis or hypothesis we came up with very early in the process could’ve been different than just creating something pleasant.
