Abstract

Do you like natural disasters? Well, you’re in luck! My science project is about tsunamis.
my question is how do tsunamis form, and how do they effect the environment. This has been on my mind for quite a while now.
First, I did my research. Next, I made this PowerPoint. Then, I paraphrased everything to the best of my ability.
I got the results I wanted. The sources I used were very helpful.
I met my objective. To explain how tsunamis effect the environment.

Object and Inquiry

In today’s lab I’m doing a project on tsunamis. My question is how do tsunamis form, and why do they cause so much damage. [/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIyVG9ySCUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRmElM0U=[/vc_raw_html][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

Thesis

My thesis is how tsunamis form and the aftermath. Tsunamis are formed by underwater earthquakes, underwater volcanoes, etc. The main thing that effects people is disease. All the sewage gets in the water, and people don’t have clean water, and they get sick. [/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIyUldVJTIyJTNFJTNDJTJGYSUzRQ==[/vc_raw_html][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Research Write Up

Prior knowledge: Tsunamis are caused by underwater earthquakes, and underwater volcanoes. Don’t even think about climbing a tree or a pole. You’ll get caught in the debris in the water. Tsunami means tidal wave in Japanese. Get to high shelter and listen for warnings. You’ll know when there’s a tsunami when the shoreline is dry, and there’s no water. Tsunami’s are the most destructive natural disaster.

Research summary: Tsunami’s are very common in japan. Tsunamis aren’t just one wave, their multiple waves. An earthquake of magnitude 9 struck the Pacific Northwest in 1700 and caused a tsunami. A tsunami is a fast as a commercial jet. Reefs, bays, river entrances, can dissipate the energy of the tsunami. Tsunamis can up to 100 feet in height. The Caribbean has been hit with 37 verified tsunamis snice 1498. If you feel a strong quake, don’t stay where you are, go to higher ground. If there’s a rise or fall in sea level, go to a sturdy building.

Here are some of the effects after a tsunami end. The first one is disease. This is main trouble because sewage water can get into the ocean and make people sick. The second one is radiation. Radiation can expose anything that it encounters. That’s bad for people. The third one is loss of lives. People can die of structures falling, gas explosions, electrocution, damaged tanks, floating debris, are the cause of many deaths. The tsunami that East Africa and South East Asia in of December 2004 killed about 300,000 people.

In Japan of 2011, an earthquake and tsunami hit. Japanese prime minister, Kan Naoto, moved to set up an emergency center in Tokyo. The nuclear reactors on the coast deteriorated. 230,000 people were displaced. Transportation was partly restored. Highways are now fully operational. The rescue work was hampered initially by the difficultly in getting personal supplies.

Almost 80 percent of tsunamis occur within the Pacific Ocean’s ‘Ring of Fire’. This is due to the amount of earthquake and volcanic activity in the area, which occur due to the tectonic shifts in the earth’s plates. Tsunamis can reach speeds up to 500 miles per hour, racing across the sea. That is about as fast as a jet plane! Tsunamis can travel the entire length of the Pacific Ocean in less than a day. There is virtually no energy lost along the way due to their extremely long wavelengths.

In 2011 first the Kan and then the Noda administration proposed and pushed through the legislature three disaster-related supplemental budgets. The third and largest of these, approved in November, provided some $155 billion, the bulk of the funds earmarked for reconstruction in devastated areas. In addition, in February 2012 the government established a cabinet-level Reconstruction Agency to coordinate rebuilding efforts in the Tōhoku area. The agency was scheduled to be in operation for 10 years, the length of time it was projected to completely restore the region. In early 2015 the agency reported that nearly all the disaster debris had been removed. In addition, it noted that work had started on about three-fourths of the planned coastal infrastructure. [/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIyVGFuZE0lMjIlM0UlM0MlMkZhJTNF[/vc_raw_html][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
