Abstract

This lab report is about the science of cats and the meaning behind their famous sounds, and why the cheetah is the only big cat to trill, chirp, etc., the sounds a cat makes are easy to tell, if they are annoyed, scared, angry, or welcoming and friendly. The cheetah is still being learned about, and the one part people are still questioning is their sounds. [/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIyT2FuZEklMjIlM0UlM0MlMkZhJTNF[/vc_raw_html][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Object and Inquiry

Today we are going to talk about “cats’ sounds”. The inquiry is “What are the meanings of most cat sounds?” and the bonus question “Why are cheetahs the only big cat that can meow, purr, etc.?”. [/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIyVG9ySCUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRmElM0U=[/vc_raw_html][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

Thesis

During this project we will discover what most of the cats’ sounds and why the cheetah is the only big cat to ever meow, trill, chirp, etc.  [/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIyUldVJTIyJTNFJTNDJTJGYSUzRQ==[/vc_raw_html][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Research Write Up

Cats are small mammals that are domesticated usually for comfort and protection. These fuzzy little animals are descendants of big cats from the savannah, forest, grassland, and mountains, and the early cat we all know of, the saber-tooth tiger. Cats have many unique colors and patterns for their pelt, such as tortoiseshell or tabby, but some of them get colors from their bigger relatives, like the lion or leopard. Cats have different colors and patterns to show their specialty, and every cats pelt pattern is most definitely different except for if they’re twins. Cats have different parts to their body and one of them is whiskers. Whiskers are used for tracking in the night-time and are especially important to blind cats. Another is claws, domestic cats’ claws can unsheathe or come out, or sheathe, meaning put back, like a sword. Claws are used for defense or hunting, and so that they look intimidating.

Cats have many sounds to them, like a meow or purr, and they have different meanings to them, yet scientists don’t even know what they mean and are still trying to decipher them. Most big cats can’t meow or purr, but there is only one big cat that can purr or meow, the cheetah. Cheetah cubs can be domesticated, but it is against their nature to be domesticated, other than running in the wild. Cheetah cubs, when they’re older, are taken to the wild to live their life as a normal big cat. Domesticated cats got their “cat” purr and meow from the cheetah. Domesticated cats have complicated sounds, such as the caterwaul.

Cats have many different breeds that use one of the sounds mainly, for example, Siamese cats are “talkative,” so they meow and yowl a lot. Cat sounds are unique to every cat breed and so that is where our project comes in. We’re going to decipher some of the cat sounds, but the caterwaul is the biggest cat sound that we need to learn about. Caterwauls are cat howling and are mainly used for territory, but what if there was something beyond that? It’s like a cat’s true name, that we don’t know, and that they are trying to figure out themselves, cat sounds are very special to them and keep them secret, though they can’t talk. These sounds are like a dog, both animals have many different sounds to them but like to keep them to themselves. [/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIyVGFuZE0lMjIlM0UlM0MlMkZhJTNF[/vc_raw_html][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Data and Analysis

What I did was I listened to my cats making sounds, then I added them to my log on what the sounds that I’m researching on (the meow, purr, hiss, growl, snarl, and caterwaul). Then I researched on them more, trying to decipher what each of them mean, whether it is supposed to be territorial or it being cozy and nice. I added my research into my log and worked on my bonus question, “Why are cheetahs the only big cat that can meow, purr, etc.?”. I then learned about all the other sounds that cheetahs can make, like the trill and chirp. I went back to learning about the deciphering of cat sounds and learning from people who study animals on YouTube and other books. After I listened and read, I listened to my cats as well, hearing my cats’ trills and chirps, and learning about why they trill and chirp, as bonus sounds. These sounds usually come from queens, but they trill and chirp if they’re hunting or playful. The more common sounds are easier to decipher, though there are loads of reasons why they make those sounds.  [/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIyUmFuZEMlMjIlM0UlM0MlMkZhJTNF[/vc_raw_html][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Results and Conclusion

This conclusion is that most of the sounds are used to claim territory, signal that they need something, or to be friendly and welcoming. Most of the sounds are either friendly, or territorial, though some are used to signal they are scared, or apprehensive about something. As you may know, the hiss is usually used when the cat is scared, but at times the hiss can mean that the cat fears something, the growl used the same way. The bonus question “why are cheetahs the only big cat that can trill, chirp, etc.?” this question is still being questioned, though there are no answers to this. [/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIySWFuZFIlMjIlM0UlM0MlMkZhJTNF[/vc_raw_html][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Insights and Reflections

God’s work is still mysterious, and He is letting us find the answers in his beautiful masterpieces, in this case, the quick cheetah, the only big cat that can trill, purr, chirp etc. There are many more animals that are soon to be discovered, and big cats are very fascinating to learn about. It has been a pleasure making this fun experiment. God Bless! [/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]JTNDYSUyMGlkJTNEJTIyQmliJTIyJTNFJTNDJTJGYSUzRQ==[/vc_raw_html][vc_separator color=”black” el_width=”80″ css_animation=”none”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
